Must-Try Dishes at Alexandria Restaurants

As the bloggers behind In A DC Minute we love living right here in Alexandria. We blog about dining and restaurants throughout the DC region, and the dining scene here in Alexandria is top notch. Living in Old Town means strolling hand-in-hand down King Street and wondering what new restaurant will appear next, and what spot will become our new “go-to” in a pinch. Having frequented many of the hidden gems as well as sampled the best from the newest hot spots, here are some of our favorite things to order in Alexandria.

Cheesetique has proven it’s far more than just wine and cheese, as their Truffle Mac & Cheese is one of the best small plates in Alexandria.

We are constantly blown away by what it means to be a hotel restaurant. Jackson 20, located within the Hotel Monaco, continues this trend with BBQ Ribs that take 72 hours to prepare. Thankfully for guests, they are prepared ahead of time.

Sugar ShackImage credit: In a DC Minute

Sugar Shack has shown us that it’s OK to eat donuts in the middle of the day. The mouthwatering options include Maple Bacon and an assortment of candy toppings; it’s important to remember that on any given day (or hour!) their selection might change.

Evening Star's Chicken and WafflesImage credit: In a DC Minute

After visiting Evening Star Cafe for brunch, I can comfortably say the Chicken and Waffles should be your choice next time you’re looking for an early weekend meal. Make sure to order the Bloody Mary topped with a small piece of grilled cheese sandwich.

Foodies and libation enthusiasts from near and far are excited to hear names like Cathal Armstrong and Todd Thrasher. Both have put a stamp of excellence on the Alexandria food scene, but  for this list, Society Fair’s Big Ass Chocolate Cake and Coconut Cake demonstrate that dessert need not only follow dinner, and is totally acceptable to order any hour of the day.

Three flavors of frozen custard a day and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The Dairy Godmother proves that no stroll in Del Ray is complete without dessert. You can opt for the featured flavor, but there is no shame in keeping it simple with chocolate or vanilla. Don’t forget the Doggie Ice Cream for your pup!

One of the first food recommendations we received in Old Town Alexandria was the She Crab Soup from the Warehouse Bar and Grill. Light, full of flavor, and the perfect starter on a brisk autumn day.

BRABO MusselsImage credit: In a DC Minute

“The Mussels!” This was all one reviewer said about BRABO, and after trying the dish for ourselves it’s all that needs be said. Tack on a glass of wine on their gorgeous patio and it’s a perfect evening in Old Town.

Alexandria’s restaurant and bar scene continues to get better, and these dishes are only the tip of the iceberg for the latest and greatest food finds. Enjoy!
