The joys of picnics are simple: fresh air, no-stress nibbles and stretching out on a patch of lush green grass. What’s that you say? Alexandria has all of these glorious summer treats? Cha-ching! From parks to pre-packed baskets, the city has it all. And as if picnic-going could get any easier, I’ve broken down the steps to gathering goodies for the perfect picnic in Alexandria, from blankets to sweets, even where to head for great views, doggie hotspots and a little history. Now get to picnicking!
Step one: Assemble Picnic Gear

Everyone knows the ultimate picnic needs the ultimate gear. Try home décor haven Red Barn Mercantile for plush blankets perfect for stretching out in style (laying in the grass not your thing? Don’t worry—this park page details where you can find benches). And you very well can’t eat with your hands from your lap (or gorgeous blanket), so head to Del Ray Variety for all your plastic and paper needs like cups, plates and cutlery (plus you might just find an outdoor game or two to enjoy at the park).
Step two: Basket time!

The beauty of picnics is they’re on the go. Lucky enough, in addition to gourmet restaurants, Alexandria is chocked with to-go style joints as well. Pre-order a pre-packed picnic basket from Society Fair (score!) or pop in for sweet treats, sandwiches and fresh-baked pastries, or head to the Waterfront Market for more delish and quick sandwiches and drinks.
Step three: Park it
I’m not kidding when I say Alexandria has a park for every preference: dog-friendly, family-forward, historic, waterfront; you name it, it’s there. For stunning waterfront views, try Founders Park, which also has a dog exercise area and a volleyball court. At the Armory Tot Lot, find a sandbox and slides for little ones, or head down to Jones Point Park, further along the Potomac River, for a historic mini-lighthouse and the original Washington, DC boundary stone.
Step four: Enjoy!
As if this needs explaining! Get outdoors, bask in the sunlight and enjoy a beautiful afternoon in Alexandria.
