“King Street Lights Are Breathtaking!”
If you’ve “stargazed” under the canopy of twinkling lights that line King Street, you can understand why 64% of our Twitter followers responded to a poll saying they crave the twinkling lights everywhere during the holidays in Alexandria.

Mary, an Old Town resident, said “I have lived here for sixteen years, yet each year when the magical King Street lights go up, I am in awe. It never gets old, especially when you see the eyes of visitors light up when they see it for the first time. The best way to enjoy the lights above King Street is on a stroll from one end to the other, then hopping on the free trolley to get back.”
“I Crave the Beautiful Decorations in Every Neighborhood!”
Alexandria is known for its historic row houses and authentic cobblestone streets, but during the holidays, our neighborhoods steal the show. According to our Instagram follower Elizabeth, “The most wonderful thing about Alexandria is that it always feels like a holiday. The simplicity of the added wreath just puts this charming house front over the top.”

Elizabeth wasn’t alone—Rick, a first-time visitor from New York City said, “In the morning, I grabbed a cup of coffee at Misha’s and found myself wandering the neighborhoods looking at the incredibly creative wreaths and door decorations. I even noticed some made of pineapples and other fruits—I crave this kind of creativity and will definitely be back next year!”

Black Friday and Small Business Saturday may be over, but shopping small in Alexandria is a way of life all year round. Even if you still have holiday shopping left to do, it doesn’t have to be stressful in our city. We caught up with a shopper in Old Town who said, “I actually live in Maryland, but I crave the personalized attention I get in the Old Town Boutique District so I keep coming back year after year. I don’t have to worry about rushing to get everything done on Black Friday because I know the independent shop-owners in Alexandria can help me find the perfect unique gift right up until the last minute.”
It’s not just visitors who crave shopping small, Facebook follower Sophia says she craves “being back there with my sons and friends and shopping.”
