This detailed mural outside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center was designed by families in the community during Del Ray’s annual Art on the Avenue event. It’s filled with inspirational quotes and scenes from Del Ray neighborhoods.

The historic Del Ray mural outside of Cheesetique on Mount Vernon Avenue shows imagery of the old Potomac Yard railway linking Alexandria to Washington, D.C. as well as the St. Asaph Racetrack.

St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub

The funky mural outside the recently renovated St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub pays tribute to legendary musicians, including Jim Morrison who lived in Alexandria for some time when he was growing up. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and people watch along Mount Vernon Avenue.

Your Dog’s Best Friends

The mural outside of Your Dog’s Best Friends facing E. Del Ray Ave. is another one that was created during Art on the Avenue. In Melissa’s photo, the intertwining trees and the bright blue background almost seem like they blend into the sky on a clear day.

Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative

As one #InstaMeetALX participant said, this bright and colorful mural outside of the Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative would need a panoramic shot to capture the whole thing. This mural is the perfect stop for a game of “I Spy” with fun and intricate details hidden throughout the farmstand-themed design including dogs, fruits, children and more.

House on Mount Vernon Avenue

This house across from Bon Vivant Cafe + Farm Market on Mount Vernon Avenue is painted with an eye-catching mural that seems to sprout right out of the ground. The plants, birds and butterflies make it feel like springtime year-round when you walk by this house.

Junction Bakery & Bistro

Junction Bakery & Bistro may be new this year, but it already feels like a Del Ray classic. The blue mural outside the bakery has a vintage feel that nods to Del Ray’s railway and streetcar past. Check out the mural, but be warned: pastries and other goods are baked on-site daily, making it hard to resist a treat (or two) when you can smell the deliciousness from outside.
