22 New Restaurants in Alexandria, Virginia

The booming dining scene in the historic waterfront city of Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C., continues to flourish with world champion barbecue, historic recipe beer, and chef-driven concepts with Asian flavors. Increasing trends in creative comfort food and in dessert and sweets spots wind through the city’s largely independent culinary scene, enticing those seeking a crave-worthy experience.

We’ve rounded up the new and noteworthy restaurants in the Port City to keep you in the know of the most buzz-worthy food spots in Alexandria.

Creative Comfort Food

Myron Mixon’s Pitmaster Barbecue

Celebrity pitmaster Myron Mixon has partnered with barbecue championship judge and local restaurateur Joe Corey to open Myron Mixon’s Pitmaster Barbecue in Old Town Alexandria in January 2017. Myron is a 4-time world grand champion, author and TV star – and is very well known to barbecue fanatics. Inspired by his native Georgia, Myron’s award-winning dishes and competition rubs and sauces get raves from barbecue purists while he surprises diners with his creative sides and appetizers including barbecued deviled eggs, peach barbecue beans and baby back mac and cheese.

Named Virginia’s top food truck by Southern Living in 2016 for her quirky and imaginative eggroll flavors, native Alexandrian Meghan Baroody is converting her successful Meggrolls food truck and catering business to her first brick and mortar location, with a 25-seat shop coming to Old Town in the spring of 2017. Meggrolls are “eggrolls with multiple personalities” and an innovative way to enjoy favorite dishes such as Chicken Parm, Buffalo Wing, Four Cheese Mac and Chorizo Pablano. The Big Megg will satisfy a Big Mac craving, while the breakfast Meggroll tantalizes with fried egg, bacon, French toast, Béchamel sauce and maple syrup. Each Meggroll is handmade, cooked to the perfection, sliced in half and served as a hot open-faced sandwich with an amazing crunch.

Northside 10

Opened in January 2017, Northside 10 in the Arlandria neighborhood comes from the folks behind Southside 815 in Old Town, serving up classic Southern fare with daily specials and an extensive craft beer menu. Fans of Southside 815 won’t be disappointed in the new establishment, which gets 4.7 stars on Yelp for dishes like fall-off-the-bone ribs and bacon-wrapped meatloaf with beef, pork & veal, fire-grilled tomato gravy and mashed potatoes.

Hen Quarter

It’s all about Southern comfort food at Hen Quarter, opened in August 2016, with creative twists on the classics like fried chicken on a cheddar and corn waffle with compressed melon, honey pearl butter and Tennessee bourbon maple syrup.

Live Oak

Live Oak is a new restaurant nestled into Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood from chef Justus Frank, former executive chef at Fiola in D.C., along with local restaurateurs Tim Irwin and Jeremy Barber, opened in August 2016. The new locale is serving up distinctive Charleston, S.C.-inspired Southern cuisine with dishes like head-on shrimp & grits with lobster bisque and chorizo.


Beer and German Food

Portner Brewhouse

Two sisters are launching a new reason to visit Alexandria, already a destination for craft beer lovers, with the opening of pre-Prohibition inspired Portner Brewhouse in late February 2017. Catherine and Margaret Portner are honoring their great-great grandfather’s legacy 100 years later by brewing up historic family recipes from Alexandria’s Robert Portner Brewing Co., the largest pre-Prohibition brewery in the South. Portner Brewhouse, which opens its doors in February 2017, also serves contemporary German-American cuisine and offers the public a chance to taste and rate home-brewed recipes in the Craft Beer Test Kitchen™.

Old House

Old House comes from husband and wife chef duo Ivan and Amela Svalina, and will feature traditional German fare including and a variety of German pastries and desserts as well as beer, opening spring 2017.


Asian Flavors

Nasime, a tiny 20-seat Japanese concept that opened in the fall of 2016, features high praise from the Washington Post. Chef and owner Yuh Shimomura showcases the non-sushi side of Japanese cuisine with a one-of-a-kind experience of a five-course tasting menu for just $48. The evolving menu has included cauliflower surinagashi, bonito tuna tataki, and chocolate spring roll.


Popular Indian and Nepalese restaurant Namaste opened their second location in Alexandria right on King Street in December 2016. It’s a great spot for vegetarian food and offers an authentic and affordable menu with sizable portions that will definitely be enough for tomorrow’s lunch, including chef specialty lamb chana chops with barbecued lamb chop, cooked ginger and chickpeas.

Sunday in Saigon

Owner and chef My Huynh of Old Town’s popular Caphe Bahn Mi eatery will bring her newest Vietnamese concept, Sunday in Saigon, to north Old Town the spring of 2017.


On the Waterfront

Vola’s Dockside Grill + Hi-Tide Lounge

The newest restaurant from Alexandria Restaurant Partners (Lena’s, Virtue Feed & Grain, The Majestic), Vola’s opened in August 2016 and features outdoor dining right on the marina overlooking the Potomac River at 7 King Street. The restaurant, named after former city manager Vola Lawson, serves up fresh seafood and the Hi-Tide Lounge next door is a fun and low-key environment to grab a drink and small bites with a group of friends.

Restaurant at Hotel Indigo

The highly anticipated Hotel Indigo will open this spring as Old Town’s first riverfront hotel and is an exciting addition to Alexandria’s evolving waterfront. The soon-to-be announced restaurant will include a 5,000 square foot terrace with Potomac River views.


Hip Quick Service

EatsPlace chef and founder Katy Chang has expanded upon her DC-based “Food Incubator and Pop-uppery” in Petworth with a new café concept at Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory Art Center, which opened in January 2017. Chang, a DC native, has already received attention from the Washington Post for her creative invention of the “bronut,” a cross between a brownie and a doughnut. You can pick up a bronut and other baked goods as well as soups, sandwiches and salads before strolling through over 80 working artist studios.

The Italian Place

The Italian Place opened in September 2016 and is a small family-owned Italian market in North Old Town, serving a variety of Italian sandwiches and imported Italian goods including cheese, wine, gelato, pasta, pasta sauces and more. Plus, they have Friday night wine tastings from 5-7 p.m.

SweetGreen got its start in the D.C. region and is a local favorite for healthy salads on-the-go. The new eatery on King Street opened in December 2016 and is a spacious spot to get salads loaded with a variety of seasonal toppings. You can build your own salad or choose from warm and seasonal bowls on a rotating menu that includes local and organic items like squash, roasted chicken, roasted sesame tofu and homemade dressings like carrot chili vinaigrette and curry yogurt dressing.


Burger Joints

Flat Top Burger opened in December 2016 on the east side of the Del Ray neighborhood, near Potomac Yard, and adds another delicious spot to Alexandria’s long list of burger joints with its own unique menu items, including fun specialty milkshakes and build-your-own-burger or quinoa burger with tons of toppings. They’ve even got a classic Ms. Pac Man machine to keep you busy while you wait.

BurgerFi is another new addition to Alexandria’s burger scene, with one of its newest locations opening in November 2016 in Old Town. BurgerFi is a fresh take on classic burger joints, serving a variety of specialty burgers including the Breakfast Burger with bacon, cheese, maple syrup, a fried egg, a hash brown, onions and ketchup.


Cocktails and Cuisine in Carlyle

Whiskey & Oyster

Whiskey & Oyster will be the newest restaurant from the folks behind Holy Cow, Pork Barrel BBQ and Sweet Fire Donna’s, opening spring 2017. Located in Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood, Whiskey & Oyster will feature a 20-foot oyster bar, a 50-foot bar, and outdoor dining with fire pits perfect for summer nights.


Sweet Spots

Nicecream Factory

Liquid nitrogen meets fresh farm ingredients at made-to-order ice cream concept Nicecream Factory, bringing its newest location to Old Town Alexandria in the spring of 2017, joining nearly 20 artisanal sweets and dessert spots in this already sweet dessert destination. Each Nicecream serving is crafted right before the customer’s eyes with rotating weekly and seasonal flavors such as Mint Mojito, Cran-Orange Dark Chocolate Chunk and Butter Toffee Pecan.

NazBro Chocolates and Fudge

Chocolate-lovers can find another reason to love Alexandria with the addition of NazBro Chocolates and Fudge on King Street, new in December 2016. The family-owned chocolate shop got its start nearby in Occoquan, Virginia, their only other location.

Dolce & Bean

Coming to Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood in the spring of 2017, Dolce & Bean is a family owned confectionery shop offering premium artisanal products, including macarons, gourmet fudge, crepes and gelato.

Duck Donuts

Duck Donuts will also bring its signature concept to Alexandria in the spring, offering customers made-to-order doughnuts with their choice of toppings and other warm, freshly made doughnuts of the day such as Maple Bacon & Raspberry Drizzle and Blueberry & Powdered Sugar.



Still craving more new spots? You can also check out the new pop-up bagel shop Salt | Bagel in Del Ray until February 26 at the site of the Dairy Godmother. Pick up farmers market-famous Bagel Uprising bagels with toppings and pickled sides made by Number One Sons, but be sure to check their Twitter feed for up-to-date hours and availability.
