1. Visit Oktoberfest-Themed Village Brauhaus
Say “Cheers!” (or “Prost!”) at King Street’s Oktoberfest-themed Village Brauhaus, which offers modern and traditional takes on German and Austrian cuisine and seven styles of Oktoberfest beers. The party starts with a fun-filled Oktoberfest Eve on September 20, 2019. Then, experience an authentic Munich tradition on September 21, 2019, as Village Brauhaus taps a Hofbräu München keg flown in from Germany. Enjoy giveaways, a special Wies’n menu, trivia and live tunes. German garb is welcome, and Oktoberfest specials and live music will continue every weekend through October 20, 2019.
2. Raise a Glass at Port City’s Oktoberfest Release Parties
On September 28, 2019, head to award-winning Port City Brewing Company’s West End facility for an outdoor party highlighting their signature Oktoberfest lager, brewed with German malt and hops. Don your dirndl and lederhosen for costume contests and pair your lager with Pizzeria Paradiso’s Neapolitan pies, fresh-baked pretzels from Village Brauhaus, and more. Snag the Lyft discount code for safe travels.
Gear up for the big event at release parties around the city. Grab a ticket for The Garden’s Del Ray soiree on September 14, 2019, featuring 16 local Oktoberfest brews, live music and menu options such as the stuffed house pretzels and soft-shell crab sandwiches. On September 26, 2019, take in Theismann’s newly-renovated interior as you sample Port City brews during their take on Oktoberfest. Then, Carlyle’s Trademark Drink and Eat will host a reservation-only, six-beer, four-course meal on September 27, 2019. Come for the warm pretzel bites paired with peach brown ale and stay for the braised bratwurst with Port City’s Optimal Wit.
3. Bring Your Pup to Dogtoberfest
Don’t miss Port City’s Dogtoberfest for furry friends, in partnership with Frolick Dogs sports club. Raise a glass to all things canine, from dog adoption to a bulldog kissing booth to an agility course and dog-themed trivia, as well food trucks for both human and doggie dining. A percentage of sales throughout the day will be donated to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
4. Hoist a Stein at Hops N’ Shine
Arlandria’s Hops N’ Shine will host its own Oktoberfest beer-and-moonshine shindig on September 21, 2019. As you linger in the dog-friendly backyard biergarten, test your triceps and stomach strength with stein-hoisting and food-eating contests. Or, take it easy and pair your glass with a gooey grilled cheese, from the Eeezy Caprese to the Herbalicious.
5. Feast on German Fare
In the mood for schnitzel? Step into cozy Old House Cosmopolitan Grill, a year-round go-to for German and Bosnian cuisine on N. Cameron Street. Choose between goulash, spätzle or cevapcici sausage and, on a mild autumn day, sit out on the balcony and savor a slice of Black Forest cake.
On October 27, 2019, visit The Basilica of St. Mary for their annual Oktoberfest Festival, featuring an authentic German banquet complete with brats, kraut, beer, strudel and a full roasted pig, alongside a polka band and other family-friendly activities.
6. Take a Historic Breweries Tour
Celebrate Oktoberfest with a stroll back in time through the city’s beer scene on Alexandria’s Historic Breweries Tour, September 22, 2019. Walk through 250 years and 2.5 miles of Alexandria’s brewing history as you explore alleyways, repurposed buildings, historic taverns, brewing artifacts and more. Toast Alexandria’s lager legacy at a post-tour happy hour.
Please remember to drink responsibly.
